Steps:
- Prepare the Elderberries:
- Remove the elderberries from the stems. Discard any stems, leaves, or unripe berries, as they can be toxic and should not be consumed.
- Wash and Dry:
- Rinse the elderberries under cold water to remove any dirt or debris.
- Pat the berries dry with a clean towel to prepare them for dehydration.
- Dehydrate the Elderberries:
- Using a Dehydrator:
- Place the elderberries on the dehydrator trays in a single layer to ensure even drying.
- Set the dehydrator to 135°F (57°C) and dry for 8-12 hours or until the berries are completely dry and brittle.
- Using an Oven:
- Preheat the oven to its lowest setting (usually around 150°F/65°C).
- Spread the elderberries in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Dry the berries in the oven for 6-10 hours, checking periodically to ensure they are drying evenly. The berries should be dry and brittle when done.
- Using a Dehydrator:
- Make Elderberry Powder:
- Once the elderberries are fully dried, place them in a grinder or blender.
- Pulse until the berries are ground into a fine powder.
- If desired, sift the powder through a fine mesh strainer to remove any larger particles, ensuring a smooth and fine texture.
- Store:
- Transfer the elderberry powder to an airtight container to keep it fresh.
- Store the powder in a cool, dry place away from light, as exposure to moisture or heat can reduce its potency.
